Tustin MCAS Blimp Hangars - March 22nd, 2019
Photos taken after a recent bout of rain on the former on the former Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin.
Opened in 1942 as Naval Lighter-Than-Air Station Santa Ana, the airfield served as a base of operations for U.S. Navy coastal patrols during WWII. In 1951 the facility was repurposed as Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana and later renamed in 1979 to Marine Corps Air Station Tustin.
The focal point of the base are two iconic blimp hangars measuring over 1,072 feet long, 292 feet wide, and 192 feet tall. Build in 1942 from Oregon Douglas fir, the hangars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated at National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. The structures remain among the largest freestanding wooden structures in the world.
The base closed on July 2nd, 1999.
