Irvine: Fatal Freeway Pileup
A woman was dead, a six-month old injured, and a major freeway shutdown, early Thursday morning.
Officials responded just before 1:30 AM to the southbound I-5 freeway, just north of the I-405 in Irvine regarding a multi-vehicle traffic collision.
First units arriving on scene discovered a ten vehicle traffic collision spanning all lanes of the freeway. Upon further investigation, one deceased female was located, along with 8 other patients. Among the injured included a six-month old infant and ten-year old child. All were treated on scene before being transported to area hospitals.
Initial reports indicate a suspected DUI driver traveling at high speeds lost control before colliding with another vehicle and causing a chain-reaction crash.
All lanes of the southbound I-5 were closed pending investigation by the California Highway Patrol - Santa Ana Office.
