John Wayne Airport Pursuit Termination - December 4th, 2016
A high-speed pursuit ended abruptly late Sunday night as officers used the PIT maneuver to terminate disable a stolen vehicle at the John Wayne Airport.
At approximately 8:30 PM officers located with the Laguna Beach Police Department located Blue 1998 Honda Civic which law enforcement queries indicated was a stolen vehicle. After waiting for sufficient units and an airship, officers attempted to perform a felony car stop on the SB 73 freeway.
The vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated by officers from Laguna Beach PD, Newport Beach PD, Orange County Sheriff's Department, and California Highway Patrol. The pursuit reached speeds of 107+ MPH at points, continuing from the SB 73 to the SB I5 before turning around near the Orange-San Diego County Line. The pursuit then continued NB I5 to the NB 405 before coming to an end at John Wayne Airport after officers executed a successful PIT maneuver.
Ultimately, a solo male Hispanic driver was arrested at the scene as officers from the aforementioned agencies and the Irvine Police Department assisted with traffic control.
An investigation is ongoing and the driver is expected to be booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony evading and other charges stemming from possession of a stolen vehicle.
