Newport Beach Fatal OIS - April 15th, 2017
At 9:11 P.M. Saturday night, the Newport Beach Police Department responded to the 200 block of 61st Street after a female reported being struck by her husband with a frying pan. Officers arriving on scene found the male suspect who had armed himself with a knife. The suspect initially dropped the knife at the request of officers however for an unknown reason the individual later began resisting, grabbing the knife he had dropped earlier and threatening officers. The officer fired his weapon several time in self-defense, striking the suspect. Paramedics performed CPR and transported the suspect to OC Global Medical Center in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries. The female was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to an area hospital for further treatment. Witnesses on scene reported seeing the couple hand-in-arm earlier that evening and recalled hearing the suspect shout something to the effect of “just end it all then” shortly before the shooting occurred. It is unknown whether the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Newport Beach Police Department and Orange County District Attorney’s Office is handling the investigation.
