Newport Corvette Totaled - December 25th, 2016
At approximately 7:00 PM the Newport Beach Fire Department responded to reports of an injury traffic on the northbound Bristol Street overpass to the SR-73. Arriving engines found a a red Corvette with dealer license plates and track numbers as well as a silver Volkswagen Jetta on its side. Two patients were outside of their vehicles after having been extricated by good samaritans prior to the arrival of first responders.
Debris from the collision, including a sheered light pole and carbon fiber from the Corvette, fell from the overpass onto northbound lanes of the SR-73 resulting in at least 10 secondary collisions before a good Samaritan pulled the pole to the shoulder.
Initial reports from witnesses on scene indicated that the red Corvette with dealer license plates and racing numbers was revving while stopped at the intersection of Bristol Street and Campus Drive and then accelerated at a high rate of speed before losing control. Two patients were transported in unknown condition to area hospitals.
An investigation is ongoing.
